KTV is essentially a type of night club where people hang out with their friends or colleagues. You pay for a private room for a few hours or a whole night and then you get to sing, dance or just chat. KTV is also know as karaoke but it is not quite as same as karaoke in the west. In many western countries, people sing karaoke on a stage in a bar, in front of many strangers, whereas in China, KTV is a more private affair.
KTV is a typical evening activity in China which is popular among a variety of age groups. It's very likely that your Chinese friends and colleagues will invite you to KTV. You could also go with your family. You don’t even have to be very good at singing. Even if you're too shy to sing in front of others, you can just sit on the couch and drink and eat snacks with your friends. This is one of the best places to spend time with friends, colleagues, and family.
Additionally, KTV can certainly build relationships with your business partners or clients in a relaxed environment. So don’t be surprised if a company invites you as a guest to a KTV session after dinner. If you don't want to sing, just sit and enjoy the music. Perhaps with some "liquid courage" (alcohol 酒) or the support of friends, you will be encouraged to sing. Most importantly, just have fun.
