GoEast has grown a lot in recent years, increasing the number of students and teachers, and now, expanding its physical presence with a new campus in the heart of Shanghai's Former French Concession, Xuhui District. The brand new GoEast Shanghai Library Campus on Yongfu Road officially opens in January 2019, hosting the intensive 2-4 week Winter Immersion courses and welcoming everyone to visit the campus during a Campus Warming Party on January 12th.
The new Shanghai Library Campus brings GoEast's relaxed and fun approach to learning languages closer to the expat communities of Shanghai. Situated on Yongfu Road next to the German Consulate and around the corner from the Shanghai Library, GoEast's new campus will continue to provide a location for people from different countries to connect with each other while immersed in learning about Chinese language and culture. The Shanghai Library campus will hold weekly open classes, survival, business, and HSK small group language courses, as well as 1-on-1 and online lessons. There will also be weekly cultural events ranging from cooking, calligraphy and game nights to academic and business lectures.
The neighborhood around GoEast's new campus on Yongfu Road has a rich history and continued presence of many international cultures. Xuhui itself is an area that was given to the French in 1849 after the Opium Wars and the Treaty of Nanjing. The district is still referred to as the Former French Concession in maps and guide books. Other multicultural organizations on Yongfu Road include Wunan Kindergarten International 乌南幼儿园境外部 and the Shanghai Taiwan Research Association 上海市台湾研究会. The swimming pool that's visible from GoEast's roofdeck is part of a luxury apartment complex on Huaihai Road called Ambassy Court, which has housed many expats and wealthy Chinese families for more than twenty years.
The laneway (弄 lòng) of GoEast's new campus, Lane 147 Yongfu Road, is primarily residential, with one house officially recognized as a Cultural Relic Preservation Site 文物保护点. The main commercial resident of the street is the Shanghai Education Publishing House 上海教育出版社, which prints science and technology textbooks for students and teachers as well as some academic journals. There is also reportedly a Hollywood celebrity living in one of the houses on the lane 147!
The opening of a new campus is an exciting and momentous occasion, especially in such a historic, international, and central location in Shanghai, China's most worldly city. GoEast looks forward to helping many more people in the global community connect with China through language classes, cultural events, and engaging with the growing GoEast community at the new GoEast Shanghai Library Campus.
